We’ve been receiving a lot of emails about how to take care of combination skin. We completely understand the frustration of having dry patches along with very oily skin.
We hear you!
Based on the many questions we’re receiving about this topic, we thought it would be helpful to provide a quick list of products and tips for taking care of combination skin during the winter months!
Top 3 tips for combination skin:
1) Hydrate sufficiently: whether you’re worried about the dry patches or the oily parts, an underlying lack of hydration can contribute to and worsen both conditions. The dryness and oiliness are more related to the level of natural oils on the surface of your skin, and a lack of moisture underneath can lead to dryness or excess sebum production to overcompensate for the lack of moisture. For all skin types, all skin conditions and all ages, hydration is so foundational to healthy skin. So get your humectants on! Here’s a great pre-essence/essence booster/first essence that will pack moisture right into your dermis.
2) Gentle is the name of the game: Your combination skin, especially more extreme combination skin, is calling out for gentle treatment. No harsh ingredients or drying ingredients. Stick to mildly and gently formulated products that nourish and respect the skin back to a well balanced state.
3) Exfoliate with discipline: Excess sebum production can clog/stretch out pores and lead to acne and/or weakened skin structure. And dry skin can weaken the moisture barrier and ultimately lead to irritated, sensitive skin and/or further weaken the skin’s overall healthiness (read: accelerated aging). Exfoliating gently to keep skin clear of flakes and decongested pores with high cell turnover - on top of allowing skincare ingredients to better absorb - will give you skin a winning boost.
The perfect combination skin product line:
Aromatica’s gently and naturally formulated Sea Daffodil line is well loved for the way it effectively cleanses and treats skin that has both oily and dry parts while soothing and nourishing the skin. Finally, Mizon’s gentle exfoliating gel is also a sure bet for combination skin.
Gentle water-based foam cleanser that leaves skin clean all the way down to your pores without stripping it dry
Aloe-vera rich toner that balances your pH level while hydrating and soothing skin
Lightweight cream that will hydrate, soothe, nourish - with a decadent subtle scent, to boot. Tip: great when mixed with the Aromatica argan oil for extra suppleness.
Incredible exfoliator that gently rubs off dead skin flakes without irritation and drying skin out - great article about it here.
We hope you folks out there with normal/combination skin find this helpful in beating the cold and dry, chapped skin that comes along with this weather!
