Exfoliators for Glowing Skin
Taking the time to exfoliate regularly – removing dead skin cells and other debris from the surface of your skin – is crucial to de-clogging pores and helping stimulate the skin’s renewing process. Eliminating dead skin with the help of exfoliators will also help your skin absorb serums – along with most other products you may apply – much easier. With exfoliators, you’re not only improving the look of your skin and giving it a natural glow but you’re also making your skin healthier.
We recommend you exfoliate anywhere from 2-4 times a month, so it should not be too hard to work this step into your skincare regimen if you do it once a week. Additionally, exfoliators should always be followed by a thin layer of hydration and a SPF (as any dermatologist will tell you, sunscreen is a must, everyday!).
There are three main types of exfoliators: scrubs, chemicals, and enzymes.
Scrubs physically remove dead skin cells and other debris that's sitting on your skin and can range from large, grainy particles to microexfoliants with tiny particles that are almost pureed into the scrub. Scrubs are especially good for oily skin because they’ll remove any other gunk alongside dead skin that gets mixed with the oil. Be sure to scrub gently though, as you never want exfoliators to damage your skin by breaking down collagen.
Chemicals contain alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) which will dissolve dead skin cells rather than having them be physically removed. These chemicals also get much deeper into the skin, whereas a scrub will only work on some of the skin’s outer layers. Those with dry skin will benefit the most from a chemical exfoliator because it’ll help skin firm up and sag less, as dry skin tends to do.
Enzymes also don’t require any scrubbing and make dead skin cells dissolve but don’t have the AHAs that chemicals contain. Rather, these exfoliating products will have enzymes from pineapple and papaya. This is the best option for sensitive types because there’s no scrubbing required and none of the harsher chemicals.
