Why does authenticity matter?
As long as a brand creates great products, does it matter if the brand’s identity has deep authenticity? Here at Peach & Lily, we believe it matters, and here’s a story illustrating why.
You have may have heard about Jeju Island. It’s an island off the southwest corner of the Korean peninsula that’s a UNESCO heritage site and home to lush, beautiful ingredients. International tourists and Korean residents alike flock to the pristine island for its delicious seafood, breathtaking views, and unique island culture that sets Jeju apart from the rest of Korea. The beauty industry, similarly, looks to Jeju Island for its powerful, natural ingredients that help create skin-transforming formulas.
At Peach & Lily, we know that products are only as good as their ingredients (and how they come together in a formula), and we, too, are drawn to the beauty of Jeju Island and the precious ingredients that grow there, which is why we began to beauty-hunt for the best products using these ingredients. We found that so many beauty brands would show off ingredients from Jeju Island in their formulas, and, curious, we began to dig deeper.
We learned that the government of Jeju Island couldn’t regulate the beauty industry, so, if a brand included one tiny drop of a Jeju Island ingredient in their formula, even if that ingredient did not make a meaningful impact on the formula, the brand could still market itself as using ingredients from Jeju Island. In 2016, Jeju’s government decided to create a non-mandatory certification, “Made in Jeju,” that is bestowed only upon environment-friendly products manufactured on Jeju with at least 10 percent of the ingredients produced on the island. 1
We used this authenticity certification as our beacon to curate the best Jeju Island brands. We were specifically looking for products that truly harnessed the power of this verdant island’s ingredients in their formulas and did so in a way that was sustainable for the island. After testing so many products and researching many brands, we fell head over heels in love with The Pure Lotus.
Eugene Oh, the founder of the Pure Lotus, grew up on Jeju Island and discovered the power of the white lotus, the brand’s namesake flower, from her mother, a celebrated artist who would often paint them. A special lotus that grows on Jeju Island, in a pond by a legendary Buddhist temple, the white lotus is packed with antioxidants that help soothe redness, combat wrinkles, hydrate, and create more radiant skin.
The Pure Lotus never uses a different kind of lotus flower, only ever sourcing them from this special location on Jeju Island where the water, climate, and soil make all the difference in the power of this plant. Jeju Lotus Leaf Radiance Brightening Serum
Amazing!! I’ve only had this serum for about a week, but I’m already noticing results! I get a dark spot whenever I get a pimple, and have several dark spots on my cheeks and forehead.
